I dearly love my children. Truly.
Still, the last few unexpected hours of time without the children on a Saturday afternoon has been a joy. Enough said. Among other mundane tasks, I got WordPress up to date, filled out an annoying but necessary application, and solved a problem for my wife. Not hyper productive, but satisfying.
The [...]

Bearing witness

Scott Adams does more than just Dilbert. I don’t read his blog regularly, but someone pointed to “Existing” and it’s worth sharing. An excerpt:
It’s nice to think that you can be your own person, true and accountable to no one but yourself, but I don’t think life works that way. We are what other people [...]

Sunday Streets a sunny success
August 31st, 2008 · 1 Comment
Kudos to those who put together Sunday Streets, closing off 5 miles of San Francisco streets for 4 hours on a Sunday morning. Labor Day Weekend often serves up pleasant weather, but this morning we didn’t even have to wait for the fog to burn off. Pure sun, and pleasant walking, biking, hula hooping, you-name-it [...]

Mary on the accordion
March 31st, 2008 · No Comments
My sister Mary sits in with The Loose Marbles, a New Orleans street band. That’s her on the accordion, on the right. Original location, if the embed causes any problems.
More about the Loose Marbles in The New Yorker from May 2007.

One mile with the boy
December 23rd, 2007 · No Comments
The boy joined me this morning for the first road race using his own muscles. (His earlier efforts were riding in the jogging stroller, not always happily.)
The “Miracle Mile” was the right distance in the right location (Golden Gate Park). The crisp, clear weather (40+ degrees) meant hat and gloves for the boy — but [...]

Book: Reporting Vietnam: American Journalism 1969-1975
October 17th, 2007 · No Comments
Reporting Vietnam: American Journalism 1969-1975 is a book I own for one reason: my cousin’s picture is on the cover. He wrote one of the articles, and he provided the picture because one of the editors asked if he had any photos from that period. Turns out he did, and it fit what they wanted.

The tooth fairy
October 16th, 2007 · No Comments
Over the weekend, I pulled the boy’s loose tooth out. He asked me, and after watching him worry over this rotating incisor (top left) for days, I was glad to end the suspense. (And it didn’t hurt him.)
The hard part? Remembering to play the part of the tooth fairy. Fortunately, my better half delivered, and [...]

The wife called attention to the NPR story “Study: Men Talk Just as Much as Women.” Hmmm… we’re not quite the mean here.
