Back in my early days online, AOL went from the rising upstart (behind Prodigy and CompuServe, which it later bought) to the behemoth…before the Internet wave swamped most of the pre-Internet online services. A few of the early folks with content areas and services on AOL rode the wave, kept building their audience, adapted to the Internet, and continue to thrive.

Motley Fool is the best-known example that comes to mind. However, Kim Komando is another online media entrepreneur from the early 1990s who still has a notable audience, both online and in other media. Her biggest asset, beyond her newsletters, is her weekly radio show…which is also a Fool characteristic. I don’t know radio that well, but I’ve seen a lot of folks who come from radio really thrive online, and vice versa. (Podcast, anyone?) Not sure why that is, but speculation for another time.

How do I know Komando still has an audience that matters?

Yesterday, January 20, 2007, OpenDNS was named the Komando Cool Site of the Day, with the headline “A safer way to access Web sites.” The writeup gives a basic, brief intro to DNS, and goes on to recommend OpenDNS with these words:

OpenDNS provides improvements over other DNS servers. It offers protection against phishing attacks. Plus, it will correct spelling mistakes you make when typing addresses.

Cool Site of the Day sounds very 1997, but we saw a notable surge of visitors to the website yesterday. Right on!

We saw a corresponding rise in support requests, too. Because of the size of Komando’s audience, and her early & heavy exposure on AOL, there are several newsletter subscribers still on AOL and other dial-up providers. That highlights our need to keep explaining DNS, and why a better DNS matters, even as we focus on features for the tech-savvy. Our business can grow nicely with both audiences, fortunately.

This is also a reminder to me that delivery matters. Yes, I’m an RSS fiend, but I didn’t give up email newsletters. All those who have yet to adopt RSS are still reading email newsletters regularly, even in a world where inboxes are never empty and spam/phish/junk are a fact of life. A trusted newsletter is a tremendous asset. Keep your content and frequency below the annoyance threshold, and it’s easier to delete the ones you don’t want than to unsubscribe.

Not sure what’s wrong with Verio right now, but my pencoyd.com e-mail is down for the count right now. Can’t send or receive. Filed support notes via two different methods, but the toll-free numbers just warns that only limited support is available due to Hurricane Wilma, especially if your servers are hosted in Boca Raton. My website is up, but my e-mail is not, so maybe they are hosted differently/separately. My original account was with Best Internet, back in 1996, but they were bought out by Verio long ago, and while I’ve severed the DNS ties and a few others, I haven’t left Verio for this main domain. This kind of incident doesn’t encourage me. If you sent me something at home and were expecting a reply, be patient… or send it to my work address, first name dot last name at cnet and then a dot com. Hope to update this entry with good news in the morning.

Update: Back up again on Tuesday morning, with no response from Verio.

Had a series of quick calls with Verio this morning about the hosting of this domain, and I ended up agreeing to them moving the site from the original Best Internet servers to Verio servers. I thought this had been done years ago, since NTT/Verio bought Best some time ago, but apparently not. The company’s policy is to send emails confirming the changes to the account… which is fine.

All five emails I received today from NTT/Verio were flagged as spam, one by SpamAssassin at the server (yes, their server), and the other four by Mail.app. My own hosting company can’t send me e-mail anymore, even when they configure SpamAssassin. And yet the spammers get up to 1,000 messages/day through SpamAssassin, most of which are caught by Mail.app… but not enough, honestly. It’s getting worse, not better.

Scoble is thrilled with his Outlook ‘magic folder’ blogging tool. It’s so easy, though, that he worries about making a mistake.

I imagine a day when I accidentally drop something in there that I wasn’t supposed to. I wonder how it’d treat DRM’d email? Hmmm, we should try that out! (Execs here often send around DRM’d email to keep employees from forwarding it to the press or our friends).

DRM = Digital Rights Management. Email is famous for being forwarded and/or sent inappropriately, so most companies only send bland announcements around if there is the tiniest bit of information which doesn’t belong outside the firewall. Execs, especially, must think about this all the time. Microsoft, of course, has rueful years of experience — and stacks of legal bills — from the promiscuity and longevity of email. So it makes sense that an Outlook (Exchange?) feature I had never heard about is the ability to ‘lock’ email so it cannot be forwarded.

I’d like to know more, but have to go catch up on the TiVo’ed Survivor. Good Friday, indeed!
