AOL has blocked e-mail from my domain, which is frustrating to both me and my wife. Why? Someone in the same IP range at Verio probably sent something dodgy to AOL… or so AOL says. I hope it’s truly only temporary, no more than the 24 hours cited.

Yahoo Groups has been more consistently annoying. I keep being told that my main e-mail address is bouncing, with a hard bounce. When I go through the process to “unbounce” my account, I always get the error message in the image you see here. Catch 22… even if the error message tells me this is error code -1132. Yahoo is usually quite good about hiding/preventing these cryptic error messages, so it’s especially astonishing that this has continued over more than a month.
Trying again in a few minutes — or even a day or two later — does nothing. This is the second time I’ve run into this brick wall. Last time, I connected with Yahoo Support and was told to connect with my ISP. Thanks so much. I wonder if switching from Verio to TextDrive will alleviate these problems? It’s on my to do list at some point, though I hate the DNS disruption to email, etc.

Jeremy Zawodny asks “Is your email inbox a stack or a queue?” In simpler, less geeky terms… do you sort so new messages show up on top (stack) or bottom (queue) of your inbox?

I’m all about the stack, both at work (Outlook) and at home (Mail). First, I like to know what’s new and scan to see if I should react. Second, if the inbox gets full enough that I can’t see both the oldest message and the newest, I want to prune.

Old messages are there because the inbox is a to-do list. I’ve tried alternate methods for handling priorities, because chronology really isn’t the best method, but email continues to be the application where I spend most of my time.

My wife treats email as a queue. I never thought to ask why, but I will.

Spread the meme, either by commenting on Jeremy’s blog or blogging yourself and tracking back.

About a week ago, thanks to Ian Holsman, I set up a Gmail account. While the last thing I need is another e-mail account, I was as curious as everyone else. To test the account, I’m publishing, in text, the email address: john.roberts@gmail.com

Not that it would be so hard to figure out my work or home address, but the combination of SpamAssassin and Mail.app (at home) isn’t doing quite as good a job as it used to. The spammers are gaining in the “Red Queen” race, or so it would seem.

Recent mentions/thoughts on Gmail:

David Pogue in the NYTimes loves Gmail.

Steve Gillmor at eWeek must think if he says it often enough that Gmail will incorporate RSS. (For the record, I’m sure they will… doesn’t everybody and everything have RSS these days?)

My friend at Yahoo Mail isn’t quite so happy, but, hey, isn’t competition good for the consumer? Seriously, the storage aspect can so easily be a non-issue. All the current webmail providers do need to think hard about just how much pain it is to switch email addresses. We’ve achieved (sort of) cell phone number portability. Email portability? Well, get your own domain.

Regarding the Gmail service… it’s fast. Threads are different. Not better or worse, so far, just different. Let me know you read this blog, either on the web (sure…) or via an RSS feed (so much more likely), by emailing my Gmail account. That will force me to put the service through its paces a bit more. (Note: I’m not out to receive 1GB of spam. Thanks to Scripting.com for that slice of webness.)

Google announces GMail via this press release dated April 1. Webmail with 1GB of free storage, plus great search (as you would expect). So… is it real?

I’m asking because Simon Willison’s post ranges from excitement about the idea of the service, but then points out that Google has a sense of humor about these things (PigeonRank, anyone?). If they were ever going to pull this kind of prank, this April — perhaps their last before they go public? — would be the time. And everyone is expecting a webmail service from Google anyway, as part of an effort to provide another platform for their advertising and a reason for people to register with Google, giving them further insight into their immense user base.

If it’s a hoax, it fooled:

John Markoff of the New York Times

Paul Festa of CNET News.com

Amit Asaravala of Wired News

Jefferson Graham of USA Today

and over 343 publications, per Google News, are ‘related’

I guess we’ll all see tomorrow. Google gets so much publicity for free already… imagine all the follow-up articles every publication will have to run if this is a joke?

Check GMail.com on April 1.
