Movie: The Illusionist

September 20th, 2006 · 1 Comment

It’s been more than two weeks since we saw The Illusionist, but it was worth the time (and money… big city tickets + surcharge + babysitter). Of course, I’ll give most anything with Edward Norton a chance. The finale tries a bit too hard to evoke The Usual Suspects (an all-time favorite), but the Metacritic score of 68 is reasonable. According to data from Matthew Hurst, maybe this film is a sleeper hit?

Is there any good movie site out there which does not use Flash?

I also really enjoyed this movie, despite the predictable ending. (And I did not predict the ending of “The Usual Suspects”.) Excellent acting - even Jessica Biel was good, and boy was I ready for her to look pretty and be terrible in every other way. It was such a joy to see Edward Norton have the chance to do more than be a bad guy. He does that well, but he’s capable of so much more, so it was great to see him get to do more - much much more. And Paul Giamatti (sp?) in a very different type of part than I’ve ever seem him in before. I strongly recommend this movie for an entertaining night out. Not too hard, but not at all cheesy either.
